        About the plantations

Sakami Coffee Ranches Ltd. was founded by Gloria, who gave up her career as a beautician to devote herself entirely to coffee. Together with her husband Jarmo, she bought a historic coffee plantation in the North Rift Valley, a region best known for corn. They wanted to make the area famous for specialty coffee as well.

The 120-hectare plantation is located at an altitude of 1,800 meters and combines coffee cultivation with macadamia, avocado, dairy, and vegetable farming. The name Sakami is inspired by their daughters Sheila, Saar, and Nakami.

        About the farmers

Gloria works closely with local farmers and encourages them to plant their own trees and taste their coffee. Many had never tasted their own harvest before. Sakami also forms a network of progressive women, including a doctor, a marketer, a banker, a teacher, and Gloria herself. Together, they strive to renew coffee culture, promote economic independence, and free generations of farmers from underpayment.

        Processing the coffee

Only fully ripe coffee cherries are picked by hand, mainly by women. The cherries are pulped on site and, until now, dry processing has been outsourced to commercial mills. Sakami wants to install its own dry processing equipment in the near future in order to maintain complete control over the quality of the green coffee beans.

        Roasting the coffee

The coffee is roasted on a Probat UG22 (22 kg, built in 1965). The roasting time is 10 minutes. After the first crack, 25% of the roasting time remains, resulting in a balanced roast profile.

        Pricing

70% paid to Gloria and Sakami for the AA-grade crops.
3% costs for outsourced dry processing.
7% customs, clearance, insurance, and transport from Nairobi to Rotterdam.
15% for import and quality management by This Side Up.
5% financing costs for direct payment to farmers.
