What is Cold Brew coffee?
Cold brew coffee, the perfect summer drink, is the younger, hipper sister of iced coffee. They're not the same, as they're brewed differently. Iced coffee is brewed with hot water and then cooled, while cold brew coffee is brewed with cold water and then steeped in a sealed container for 12-24 hours. Because the brewing method is different, there's also a difference in taste. Cold brew is milder and sweeter than iced coffee.
Requirements:
- A sealable jar of at least 0.5 liters
- 0.5 liter cold water
- Coffee grinder
- Libra
- Coffee beans or 40 grams of (coarsely) ground coffee
- (Vegetable) milk
- Cup of ice cubes
- Filter holder with paper filter or a fine sieve
- Tablespoon
- Glass
Step 1: Ground coffee
Grind coffee beans to a coarse grind and weigh out 40 grams of coffee. Spoon this coffee into the sealable jar.
Step 2: Add water
Add 0.5 liters of cold water to the coffee and stir well with a spoon. Place the pot in the refrigerator and let it steep for 12-24 hours.
Step 3: Filter
Pour the brew through the filter or sieve. If the sieve isn't fine enough, filter it several times. Don't stir or press the mixture. Just let it run through gently. This prevents the coffee from becoming bitter.
Step 4: Pouring
Add the ice cubes to the glass and fill it about 1/3 full with coffee. Prefer something stronger? Add more coffee.
Step 5: Add milk or water
Dilute the coffee with the (plant-based) milk. You could also use cold water or half-and-half. It all depends on your taste. In the video, we used almond milk.
Which grind for cold brew?
For cold brew, we use a coarse grind, comparable in texture to cane sugar. If you have your coffee ground at your Kaldi location , ask for French press grind.
Play around with the proportions of coffee, water, and (optional) milk. Through trial and error, you'll find the ratio that tastes best to you.
You can also make cold brew in larger quantities and store it in a sealed bottle or jar after straining. You can keep it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
