You've probably heard of a franchise organization. And you might also know that most large companies like McDonald's and Albert Heijn are partly made up of franchisees. But what exactly is a franchise organization? And how can you become a franchisee?
A franchise organization is when an existing company (for example, AH) sells its franchise formula to an entrepreneur. This gives the entrepreneur permission to use the company's name and set up a store under the AH name. The advantage for the entrepreneur is an easier start, as consumers are already familiar with the concept. For the franchisor, it has the advantage that they don't have to run all their own businesses simultaneously, and the franchisor also receives a certain percentage of the turnover. As an entrepreneur, you often also have to pay an entry fee to the franchisor.
There are two main types of franchise: 'hard' franchise and 'soft' franchise. The difference lies in the way agreements are made. In 'hard' franchise, clear, detailed, and strict agreements apply to almost all aspects of business operations. Most matters are already established. This includes marketing, product range, and store concept. As an entrepreneur within a hard franchise, you often don't have much input and are often not allowed to deviate from the offered product range.
Soft franchise is, as the name suggests, the opposite of hard franchise. This means that franchisees are freer to run their own business. Of course, there are rules they must adhere to. But there are also aspects that are not completely fixed, such as advertising, purchasing, marketing, and inventory. The entrepreneur is therefore free to shape these aspects themselves.
How do you know which type of franchise to choose? That depends a bit on your personality. Do you prefer safety and don't dare to take risks? Then hard franchise might be more for you. If you enjoy figuring everything out yourself and dare to take risks, then you should opt for soft franchise.
If you'd like to start a soft franchise, Kaldi is a good option. Our entrepreneurs each have a unique store where they can sell various products (in addition to our own assortment). Does this appeal to you? Read more or request information directly.
