What is Rainforest Alliance?
Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization that protects ecosystems and the animals and people who depend on them. The organization works exclusively with certified plantations and farms to preserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable living conditions. Independent organizations monitor compliance with strict requirements, making the Rainforest Alliance a reliable certification for businesses and consumers. Products bearing the Rainforest logo meet strict social and environmental standards.
In 2014, the State of Sustainability Initiatives Review rated Rainforest Alliance highest in social impact (84 percent), above Fairtrade, UTZ, and organic. The Rainforest Alliance certification stands for transparency and sustainability, something Kaldi Coffee is proud of.
What does Rainforest Alliance certification entail?
The Rainforest Alliance seal, recognizable by the little green frog, adorns many Kaldi coffee blends. This little frog was deliberately chosen because frogs are indicator species for the health of the environment. Their presence indicates a healthy ecosystem. The little frog on a package therefore guarantees that the coffee has been produced sustainably and with respect for nature.
The Rainforest Alliance frog certificate indicates that a farm, forest, or tourism business meets strict standards for environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic sustainability. To be certified, a farm must meet the requirements of the Sustainable Agricultural Network (SAN):
- Conservation of biodiversity
- Improvement of living conditions and well-being
- Conservation of natural resources
- Effective planning
Rainforest Alliance, active in more than fifty countries since 1987, works with certified farms and plantations that operate sustainably to protect ecosystems and the people and animals that depend on them.
