The research figures

Billions of coffee capsules end up in Europe's trash bins every year. Wageningen University & Research examines the environmental impact of three types of coffee capsules: compostable biobased capsules, conventional plastic capsules, and aluminum capsules. It focuses not only on greenhouse gas emissions but also on circularity, measured with the Material Circularity Indicator (MCI).

Compostable is the new standard

The study concludes that compostable capsules are the most sustainable choice, considering both emissions and circularity. Their 100% MCI when composted makes them fully circular. Both the coffee grounds and the capsule material can be organically recycled into valuable compost, even if consumers accidentally throw the capsules in the wrong bin.
