Espresso machines have a rich history and originate from the steam era. Luigi Bezzerra and Desiderio Pavoni adapted Moriondo's design, who was the first to develop a machine that pressed steam through compressed coffee using pressure. In the beginning, all machines worked with a lever and a spring, which ensured that the the pressure of the water on the coffee slowly decreased. In 1961, the first system was made with an espresso machine where the pump could be operated with a button.
Nowadays, we also have the choice to let the machine do all the operations for you, also known as a fully automatic machine. There are a number of differences between these devices. We explain the differences below and help you choose your machine!
What is a fully automatic machine?
With the push of a button, a fully automatic espresso machine does everything for you, from grinding coffee to frothing milk for a cappuccino, that's the convenience of a fully automatic machine. Think of a Jura espresso machine, easy to use and maintain!
What is a semi-automatic machine?
With a semi-automatic espresso machine, you are responsible for the entire coffee-making process. In addition to the espresso machine, you also need a separate coffee grinder, with which you can determine the size of the grind yourself. You determine the amount of coffee yourself and tamp the ground coffee into the filter holder. Then you start the shot, keep an eye on the brewing time and stop it at the right moment.
Many home baristas prefer the semi-automatic, because they then have more influence on the entire process of making espresso and have more control over the coffee made.
For convenience at home, and especially with a group of people, a fully automatic machine is very useful. With every push of a button you quickly get a well-made cup of coffee without having to pay attention.
What is the right device for you?
Both machines make a good cup of coffee. The choice for the machine often depends on the budget, your morning routine and your preferences.
The advantage of a semi-automatic machine is that you are more involved in the process and you have more control over your espresso. If you want to make the perfect espresso and master the operations, then this is the machine for you.
The fully automatic machine prioritizes convenience over control and is ideal when you have a busy schedule and need to multitask in the morning. You press the button and continue with your other tasks while the fully automatic machine makes your coffee for you.
Both machines provide a good cup of coffee. If you like to make your own espresso, want to have everything under control and have the time to learn the operations, then we recommend a semi-automatic machine. On the other hand, if you have a thousand things to do in the morning and don't feel like an extra grinder and all the hassle that comes with making an espresso, then it's a good idea to consider a fully automatic machine.
Of course, it is important to clean your machine regularly to make the tastiest coffee. To enjoy your cup of coffee even more, you can purchase various accessories for your machine. From automatic milk frothers to cups for your favorite coffee drink.
