The tea bag was invented by American tea importer Thomas Sullivan by accident. In 1904, the prices of tin cans rose, causing Sullivan to decide to ship his tea in small silk bags instead of more expensive tins.
Tea
Thomas Sullivan was soon flooded with enormous orders. His buyers insisted that he continue shipping his tea in bags. To his surprise, he discovered that people were not opening the bag and tasting the tea in the usual way, but were tossing the entire bag into a cup or teapot. Shortly thereafter, he replaced the silk with gauze because it was much cheaper.
Development of the tea bag
A little later, in 1929, the German Adolf Rambold further developed tea bags, giving the tea leaves more room to unfold and release their flavour. The material of the tea bags became more porous, allowing the flavour to spread better. The tea bag has spread throughout the world and has since changed tea culture globally.
