

Kaldi wins Dutch Franchise Trophy 2021/2022!
We are proud to announce that Kaldi Koffie & Thee was named Franchise Formula of the Year 2021/2022 by the Dutch Franchise Association on Thursday, August 31st. The nominees were Kaldi, Sales Improvement Group, and Home Instead. The nominees were selected based on profitability, good earning capacity, and mutual communication. After a presentation, the candidates were judged on 7 topics with a total of 30 elements.
Word from the jury
Over 21 years ago, Hans Tietema started the first Kaldi coffee specialty store on Luttekestraat in Zwolle. The concept for the franchise formula was born then. The Kaldi formula has various elements that complement and reinforce each other. For example, there is a tasting room, customers can view different machines, enjoy a treat with their coffee, and take coffee beans home for their own use.
The focus on certain elements differs per franchisee and depends on the region, trends, and other market developments. This flexibility under the same umbrella gives the franchisee room to adapt as well as possible. The formula is characterized by sustainable growth and adapts to the changing (online) market. As a franchise organization, Kaldi places great importance on respect, transparency, and consultation. Together with the entrepreneurs, the franchisor has a common interest: making Kaldi successful. For Kaldi, successful means that every entrepreneur earns a good income. The jury praised the Kaldi organization for the cooperation between Franchisor and Franchisee, sustainable growth, communication, and finally, loyalty towards the franchisees.
The future of Kaldi
Kaldi has approximately forty franchisees and a future-proof model with retail, tasting rooms, coffee sales, espresso equipment, an online platform, mobile points of sale, and the business market. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, this diversity has served the formula well. Mobile sales completely disappeared, but this could be compensated by the store locations. "We consulted a lot; that's also the strength of franchising. Working together. And we facilitate; I see it as a "apothecary's cabinet." We have many drawers, and we open the right drawer when the franchisee asks us for something. This means, for example, that it is not necessary to purchase products or create advertisements oneself, because that distracts and takes away the focus from what is important for the branch: the guest. Good franchisees use the system." Tietema sees the win of the NFV Franchise Trophy as an appreciation for his organization and for the franchise model that Kaldi employs. "We have been around for 21 years; this is truly a wonderful anniversary gift. And we would like to share with our franchisees and customers that we are the best franchise formula in the Netherlands; of course, we will spread this far and wide. Truly fantastic."
