Koffie en thee gebruik in Nederland

Coffee and Tea Consumption in the Netherlands

Since 1996, coffee consumption in the Netherlands has decreased by about 13 percent to an average of 3.2 cups of coffee per person per day in 2013. Relatively speaking, a lot of coffee is consumed in the Netherlands, but worldwide, Scandinavians are the biggest coffee drinkers. The Finns were the biggest coffee drinkers with about 5.4 cups of coffee per day.

In 2013, Dutch people consumed approximately 6.9 kilograms of coffee per person throughout the year. About 20 years before that, consumption was still around 3.6 cups per day, after which a gradual decline set in. Recent figures, however, show that this decline has stabilized. Dutch people now drink an average of 2.5 to 3 cups of coffee per day. It is notable that the popularity of coffee varieties such as espresso, cappuccino, and coffee specialties has increased, as has the demand for sustainable and fair trade coffee.

Tea is deeply rooted in Dutch culture, which is also evident from tea consumption. In 2013, the average Dutch person drank 90 liters of tea per year, which amounts to about 2 cups of tea per person per day. This makes tea one of the top three most consumed beverages in the Netherlands.

Recent developments show that tea remains undiminished in popularity, although growth is less strong than with coffee. However, there is a clear shift visible in the type of tea being drunk: in addition to traditional black tea, more and more consumers are opting for green tea, herbal tea, and fruit tea, often with a focus on health and well-being.
