Origin of our coffee beans
In specialty coffee, quality starts with the coffee farmer. The coffee farmer does everything possible to ensure the highest possible quality in the process from berry to green bean. This includes careful cultivation, selection, processing, drying, and storage.
Because the coffee is of higher quality, the roaster can then develop a roasting profile that optimally brings out the flavours in the bean. After that, it is up to the barista to extract those flavours as well as possible from the coffee.
The difference is not just in better beans. It is in the entire chain.
Our coffee roaster preserves the quality of our Kaldi coffee beans so that no flavour is lost. All our coffee beans are extensively tested for quality and freshness by roasting small quantities by hand. An intensive task, but very important to give you the guarantee of our high quality! Kaldi's coffee beans are specially selected and come from all parts of the world where coffee is grown.
All these countries together are also called the coffee belt, and this is where most of the world's coffee is grown. Our blends are composed of different types of coffee beans, originating from different countries, regions, and plantations, so that we can give you a unique and consistent taste experience. Difference between Arabica coffee beans or Robusta coffee beans
The most widely consumed coffee bean variety worldwide is the Arabica variety, and that's no coincidence. This is because Arabica coffee is known for its soft and aromatic flavour profile. Arabica coffee beans are often associated with subtle sweetness and a light acidity, making them a favorite among coffee lovers.
On the other side of the spectrum, we find Robusta coffee beans, which offer a completely different experience. Robusta coffee beans are known for their powerful and slightly bitter character. Although coffee composed entirely of Robusta beans is rare due to its intense flavour, Robusta is often used in blends, mixed with Arabica coffee beans, to create a perfect balance of flavour and texture. Nevertheless, 100% Arabica blends are also exceptionally popular due to their refined flavour profiles.
But what actually causes the big differences between these two types of coffee beans? The main difference lies in the altitude at which the coffee beans grow. Arabica coffee grows at higher altitudes, such as in the mountainous regions of Central and South America. On the other hand, Robusta is more at home at lower altitudes, mainly in Southeast Asia. Here, Robusta has to protect itself better against parasites and diseases, and it does this by producing caffeine which protects the plant and berries. The result is a coffee with significantly more strength and intensity.
In short, the choice between Arabica and Robusta coffee is a choice between two different worlds of flavour, influenced by the growing conditions and natural properties of the beans. Whichever type of coffee bean you prefer, with every sip you discover the complex diversity that coffee has to offer. Read more about the differences in this knowledge base article.
What is a coffee blend?
A coffee blend is like a symphony of flavours, composed of diverse coffee beans originating from different continents, countries, and regions. At Kaldi, we take the blending of these beans very seriously. We strive to create every blend with a perfect balance of flavours and aromas. How do we do that? The secret lies in carefully selecting and blending the coffee beans. It is an art form in itself. This coffee has unparalleled quality and a refined character that will enchant your taste buds time and time again.
But why are coffee blends so popular, and why do they exist? First and foremost, coffee blends offer unparalleled versatility. They bring together a rich diversity of flavours, making every cup of coffee an adventure in itself. Whether you like a subtle nutty tone, a hint of chocolate, or a spicy finish, there is a blend for everyone.
But that's not the only advantage. Blending coffee beans also ensures consistency. Think about it: imagine brewing your favorite cup of coffee in the morning and it tastes perfect, and then, a few days later, it suddenly tastes different. That's something you, as a coffee lover, certainly don't want to experience. By using a blend, we can ensure that every cup of coffee you brew has the same delicious taste and aromas. This makes coffee blends the ideal choice for those who want to enjoy a familiar and high-quality coffee experience time and time again.
So, the next time you enjoy your morning cup or take an afternoon break with a cup of coffee, remember that there's much more to it than just beans. Decaf coffee beans with less caffeine
The taste of our delicious coffee, but less caffeine in your cup? Then our decaf coffee beans are the perfect choice for you. The caffeine is removed from the coffee beans using the so-called Lendrich process.
The coffee beans are first treated with steam. This steam causes the beans to swell slightly and opens up the structure of the bean. This makes it easier to remove caffeine from the bean later, without the coffee being unnecessarily harshly treated.
After this pre-treatment, the caffeine is removed from the bean. Then the beans are steamed again, so that any residual substances from the process disappear.
Subsequently, the beans are dried back to the correct moisture percentage and can be roasted like other coffee beans.
The goal of this method is to remove caffeine while preserving the character of the coffee as much as possible.
Which coffee beans for cappuccino or latte macchiatto?
For coffee lovers who enjoy adding milk (alternatives) to their coffee creations, choosing the right coffee bean type is crucial. This is because specific bean types taste better with milk than other coffee beans. For a creamy latte macchiato and cappuccinos, we recommend a soft and balanced Arabica coffee bean. Its mild flavour forms a perfect harmony with the milk, resulting in a silky smooth texture and rich aromas.
If you're looking for a more robust flavour that still stands out in milky drinks, Robusta coffee beans are a great choice. They offer a strong and pungent taste that blends well with milk and provides a powerful coffee experience.
Whether you prefer Arabica or Robusta, both coffee types can be adapted to your taste preferences and preparation methods. Dark roasted coffee beans can impart a bitterness that is beautifully balanced with the milk (alternative) in the coffee. Light roasted coffee brings some extra freshness. Choose the coffee beans that best suit your favorite milk-based coffee recipes and enjoy the perfect cup of coffee that meets all your expectations. Grinding coffee beans
You too probably have a favorite way of making coffee. For many, this involves using whole coffee beans in a fully automatic machine. The fully automatic machine grinds automatically based on your settings. But what if you use, for example, a semi-automatic machine, moka pot, or French press? No worries, we grind your coffee beans completely free of charge, both for online orders and in-store purchases!
Storing coffee beans
- A coffee bean is very sensitive to the elements, even after roasting and packaging. Store your coffee beans airtight to maintain freshness, for example in an airtight container, resealable bag, or special coffee storage jar.
- Store your coffee beans in a cool, dark, and dry place, such as a kitchen cupboard or pantry. Heat and humidity can cause the oils in the beans to turn rancid, which negatively affects the taste.
- It is also important to keep your coffee beans away from strong odors. Coffee beans have the ability to absorb odors, and you certainly don't want your coffee to take on unwanted flavours.
- Grind the beans just before use for optimal flavour. Ground coffee oxidizes much faster than whole beans and therefore loses its taste and aroma more quickly.
