Coffee has been a hugely popular drink for years. You'll find a coffee shop on every street corner, and one barista makes even wilder coffee creations than the next. People are also experimenting a lot at home, while at the same time old brewing methods are being 'rediscovered'. Below are the most important coffee trends at a glance.
Coffee Trend 1. Cold Brew
Cold brew is a method where ground coffee beans are steeped in cold water or room temperature water for up to 24 hours.
This leads to greater oxidation, creating a sweet taste that is much less acidic and bitter than normal iced coffee.
Coffee Trend 2: Nitro coffee
This is a cold coffee infused with nitrogen gas. This infusion affects the taste and texture of the coffee. It gives you a frothy, velvety, and rich texture with a slightly sweeter taste than regular iced coffee. The theatrical element is also not insignificant: it is stored in a pressurized keg before being poured from a tap.
Coffee Trend 3: Chemex
The Chemex first appeared in the coffee world in the 1940s. Slow coffee is popular again. When you brew coffee with the Chemex, you get a very light brew. Partly due to the filter, the fresh citrus notes, in particular, come to the fore.
Coffee Trend 4: Mocktails & Cocktails
Coffee mocktails (non-alcoholic) and cocktails (alcoholic) are increasingly prepared with high-quality coffee. This, combined with various ingredients, offers many possibilities. Try popular coffees like café mojito or espresso martini. Or invent your own variations!
Coffee Trend 5: Cascara: coffee berry tea
Cascara is made from the husks of the coffee berry and is therefore also called coffee berry tea. In winter, you drink it as warm tea, and in summer, it's refreshingly cold as 'Iced Coffee Tea' with a sweet and floral taste.
Coffee Trend 6: Non-dairy milk
There is increasing demand for plant-based milk in coffee. In addition to soy and almond milk, other types of milk are becoming popular, such as rice, macadamia, coconut, oat, and cashew milk.
