The specialty coffee of September 2025 is: Kenya Sakami
Gloria gave up her career as a beauty expert, returned to her hometown, and decided to devote her life exclusively to coffee. She had several goals: to offer high-quality coffee, to bring prosperity to the region, to nurture an abundant agroforestry system, and to change certain paradigms. Because the North Rift Valley (The Bread Basket) has been a region known primarily for corn since colonial times, Gloria wanted to make the region known for coffee as well.
The conditions for growing coffee—the wind, the altitude, and the land—are pretty much perfect. So when she and her husband Jarmo bought their farm in Trans Nzoia County, they were pleasantly surprised to discover that they were standing on one of the oldest coffee plantations in the region. They named their coffee estate Sakami, inspired by the names of their daughters: Sheila, Saar, and Nakami.
Today, Sakami Ranches Ltd. is a trademark. Coffee grows in the same area as macadamia nuts, avocados, dairy products, and vegetables. Her coffee reaches exciting corners of the world, spreading the positive reputation of Kenya and women in coffee. She works closely with the farmers and encourages them to grow their own trees and taste their coffee. “Most farmers in the region didn't even know what their own coffee flavours were like,” says Gloria, “and that's one of the first things I did when we started working together: let the farmers taste their coffee.”
