Of course, there's no accounting for taste. But good quality, fresh, and ethically sourced coffee beans certainly contribute to a good cup of coffee.
Coffee is good for you
Before we determine what good coffee is, here's the very best news: coffee has enormous health benefits. You've probably already noticed that a few cups of coffee make you much more awake and alert. This is because the caffeine increases blood flow to your brain. However, don't overdo it; too much caffeine can make you feel weak and shaky.
Did you know that coffee is even listed in the Dutch Wheel of Five by the Nutrition Centre? There is believed to be a link between drinking 2 to 4 cups of coffee and a lower risk of heart disease and stroke. Additionally, drinking 5 cups of coffee a day is said to reduce the chance of developing type 2 Diabetes. Unfiltered coffee, however, due to the substance cafestol, would have a negative effect on cholesterol.
What do experts consider good coffee?
To make good coffee, the coffee must meet a number of basic requirements. Experts generally agree on this. Here are a few of those requirements to significantly increase the likelihood that you're dealing with good coffee:
- The basics: buy good quality coffee beans;
- Use fresh, recently roasted coffee beans;
- Slowly roasted coffee beans taste better;
- Arabica beans are of better quality than Robusta coffee beans;
- Use whole coffee beans; only grind them when you are going to use them;
- Good coffee beans come in bags with one-way valves.
Good coffee does not cause unnecessary harm to people and the environment
You want to know where your coffee comes from, right? Ideally, you drink coffee that does not cause unnecessary harm to the world, the environment, people, or animals. Reliable certifications help you make a more conscious choice.
Good coffee is coffee that you enjoy
What is good coffee? Coffee that you enjoy, of course. And what coffee you enjoy, well, that's entirely up to you!
