Decaf coffee

Decaffeinated Coffee Beans

Our decaf uses a method where steam plays an important role. This method is based on the so-called Lendrich process, developed by Karl Lendrich in the early 20th century. In this process, water vapor is used to gently treat green coffee. According to CR3, these types of steaming processes are mainly used for high-quality Arabica coffees and result in a fine, mild coffee with fewer bitter substances.

How does the process work?

The coffee beans are first treated with steam. The steam causes the beans to swell slightly and opens up the structure of the bean. This makes it easier to extract caffeine from the bean later, without the coffee being treated unnecessarily harshly.

After this pre-treatment, the caffeine is removed from the bean. The beans are then steamed again to remove any residual substances from the process. Subsequently, the beans are dried back to the correct moisture percentage and can be roasted like other coffee beans. The goal of this method is to remove caffeine while preserving the character of the coffee as much as possible.

Coffee contains more than four hundred substances that are important for the taste and aroma of the final drink: it is therefore a challenge to remove only the caffeine and keep the other substances at the same level.

Is decaffeinated coffee healthier than regular coffee?

Many of the positive effects of coffee, such as its stimulating effect, come from the caffeine in the beans. Too much caffeine can lead to increased blood pressure, insomnia, or even nervousness, anxiety, and heart palpitations. If you are sensitive to caffeine, it is wise to switch to decaffeinated coffee. Although decaffeinated coffee does not provide the same boost as regular coffee, it contains almost the same amount of antioxidants. Antioxidants help your body fight free radicals, and coffee is one of the main sources of these substances, such as vitamin E and C and trace elements.
