Which coffee should you choose?

The coffee world is constantly evolving, and today's coffee assortment is incredibly vast. You'll find a wide variety of different, diverse flavours, as well as various methods for brewing coffee. A specialty store often offers an interesting selection of quality beans, which have been carefully selected and roasted. You can then choose in the store whether and how you want your coffee beans ground, coarse or fine. Of course, you can also grind the beans yourself; you can't get it any fresher!

Ground coffee beans, how and what?

Before you can brew your coffee, you need to grind the coffee beans, whether you want to make filter coffee or espresso. Each coffee preparation requires a different grind. If you have a fully automatic machine, the beans are automatically ground by the machine itself. For all other brewing methods, you use a coffee grinder to grind the roasted beans. There are different grinders, each providing its own grind with a specific quality and application.

The correct grind depends on the type of coffee you want to brew. For example, the grind for an espresso should be as fine as possible. For a lungo (regular coffee), the coffee beans can be ground a bit coarser. If you find the coffee too weak, try a finer grind. This gives the water more time to be pressed through the coffee. Do you find the coffee too strong or too bitter? Then set the grind coarser.

In the table below, you'll find a general overview of grind fineness per brewing method. How you need to adjust your coffee grinder for this varies per grinder.

What do we mean by decaffeinated coffee?

Coffee is known, among other things, for stimulating the brain and making you active and alert. This is due to the caffeine substance that is naturally present in coffee. Some people want to drink coffee but don't want that extra energy boost, for example, because it makes them sleep poorly at night, so they drink decaffeinated coffee. The method to decaffeinate coffee is almost always performed on unroasted beans and begins with steaming the beans. They are then rinsed with organic solvents, which removes the caffeine from the coffee beans. This is repeated about 8 to 12 times to meet the EU standard of 99.9% caffeine-free beans.

Additionally, efforts are naturally made to preserve coffee's distinctive flavour. Coffee contains more than 400 substances important for the taste and aroma of the final drink, so it is crucial to remove only the caffeine and maintain the other substances at the same level.

Do you want the taste of coffee but not the effects of caffeine? Then try one of our decaffeinated coffees.

Which coffee pods should I choose?

In 2001, Philips and Douwe Egberts introduced their new coffee brewing system, which allowed you to easily make a cup of coffee with the push of a button. Today, many people have a Senseo machine at home, but we increasingly hear: "Which coffee pods should I buy to get a good cup of coffee?" or "I find many coffee pods so weak and tasteless, which coffee pods should I choose?"

Of course, there's no accounting for taste, but stronger coffee pods are often recommended for making good coffee. Additionally, the quality of the coffee in the pods plays a big role.

As a final tip, it's good to run some hot water through your machine before brewing the coffee. This optimally brings out the flavours and aromas and ensures you get a warm cup of coffee, brewed with the correct water temperature.

Which coffee beans do you use for a JURA machine?

You have a beautiful JURA machine on your counter, and you naturally want to make the best coffee with it. Coffee comes in many qualities, and you'll understand that high-quality coffee is better for your machine than lower-quality coffee, and thus makes better coffee. What makes the difference? This depends, among other things, on the coffee variety, the picking method, and the roasting of the coffee beans. For a Jura machine, it's best to use high-quality Arabica coffee beans. There are several reasons for this choice:

  • The Robusta coffee bean is harder than the Arabica coffee bean, which means that (if you have cheap Robusta beans) it can cause the grinding discs in the Jura machine to wear out faster.
  • With cheaper blends, there's a greater chance of small stones from the plantation being mixed with the coffee beans. These are filtered out by the coffee roaster. With good care and craftsmanship, the coffee roaster will keep the coffee free of stones.
  • Additionally, dark roasted coffee beans are crispier than light roasted coffee beans. Light roasted coffee beans are harder and somewhat tougher, making the grinder work harder with light coffee beans than with dark coffee beans.

Kaldi's coffee beans are all suitable for your JURA machine in terms of quality; now it's just a matter of taste which coffee type you'll use to make your best cup of coffee.
