What types of coffee beans are there?

Coffee beans are seeds from the coffee plant. These seeds are found in the berries that grow on the plant. When the berry is ripe, it is harvested and processed. The two most well-known coffee beans are Arabica and Robusta, which in turn have many varieties of coffee plants. The Arabica plant grows best at high altitudes, and its slow-growing, hard beans have more flavor than the easier-to-grow Robusta beans. Arabica has a soft and aromatic taste, while Robusta has a much stronger flavor and a higher caffeine content.

Where do coffee beans come from?

Did you know that the best coffee beans grow around the equator? This is due to the ideal climate. A climate that is generally warm in temperature, has little wind, and a lot of rain is the perfect match for the perfect coffee bean.

Since the coffee plant was cultivated for trade in Central and South America in the 18th century, most of the world's coffee now comes from there. Here you can find, for example, the smoky, chocolatey, and fruity beans from the rugged, remote highlands of Guatemala. Or the full-bodied, smooth, and wet-processed coffees from Colombia. However, the biggest player in global coffee production is Brazil. Brazil supplies approximately one-third of the total world production. High-quality Brazilian coffees come from the old Bourbon plant and often have low acidity, are sweet, and have chocolate and nutty flavors.

Which coffee beans are delicious?

So, you can truly recognize coffee beans by their taste.

As mentioned, Latin American countries are known for their wine-like fruit notes. Furthermore, coffee experts claim that the best coffee beans come from African countries, such as Ethiopia and Kenya. In these countries, you will also find a fruity taste with citrus notes.

Most coffee beans are still picked by hand. Why? Because the berries of the coffee plant often don't ripen at the same time, meaning the same plant sometimes needs to be harvested multiple times. The berries are then processed wet or dry.

In the wet method, coffee beans are submerged in water for a few days. The dry method involves drying the berries on a stone surface in the sun for a week or two. The way the beans are separated from their surrounding pulp also plays a role in the character and taste of the final coffee. Wet-processed beans have a lighter, more subtle taste, while dry-processed beans, from areas where water is scarce, can have an earthy, fruity character.

The coffee is then exported as green beans. After that, the roasting process can begin: the coffee bean is heated and roasted, which determines the color and taste of the coffee bean. Lightly roasted beans have a soft, lightly aromatic taste. The darker the beans are roasted, the stronger the taste. The art is to bring out the best in each coffee bean. That's why every coffee bean receives a different approach from us, and this is necessary to ensure the taste of our coffee beans is preserved.

What else determines the taste of coffee?

As mentioned, the most well-known coffee beans are Arabica and Robusta, which in turn branch into different varieties. The first coffee plants cultivated originated in Ethiopia. The coffee plant type (variety), Typica, is still widely cultivated here. There are now many other varieties; some are natural mutations and others are the result of crossbreeding. Some varieties have their own explicit flavor characteristics, while others derive their properties from the terroir (the type of soil) in which they are grown, the way they are cultivated, and the way they are processed after harvest.

The influence of the terroir plays an important role in the development of the taste. The origin can be divided into three forms of coffee. You have single estate coffee, where the coffee beans come from one plantation. In addition, there is single origin coffee, where the coffee beans come from one specific region. Finally, there are coffee blends, where coffee beans from different regions and different plantations are mixed for the best result. This makes the coffee selection very extensive, and you will find different flavors in the various types of coffee.
